Fill your iPhone lock screen with useful Japanese phrases to accelerate your learning. The following article outlines how to make an iPhone Background, sync it to your iPhone, and set it as your lock screen background.

Download this zip file for a PSD template and Hiragana JPEG backgrounds to get you started.

1. Build your Backgrounds

Following the instructions from pscloud.com, I opened a new file in Photoshop with dimensions of 320 × 480 pixels. I created a new layer with the background image I wanted to use on my iPhone. I found a nice yellow swirl texture from Patrick Hoesly on flickr. You can find a lot of nice free backgrounds on iphone-wallpapers.org

In the aforementioned zip file, you can find the template I created under hiragana_template.PSD and phrase_template.PSD

2. Insert your Phrases, Hiragana, Katakana, or Kanji

If you created your own PSD, insert a text layer over your background image, then fill this layer with the phrase you want to learn. Copy and paste or write out the rōmaji, hirigana, katakana, and/or kanji of the phrase.

Below this, place the English translation of the phrase. Or, if you’re feeling fancy, place a small image above the phrase indicating what it is.

3. Save as PSD and JPEG

Create a convenient folder to save your image. Save your PSD here. You’ll use the PSD as a template for future phrases.

Save another copy as JPEG. This will be what your iPhone uses.

If you want, make a batch of phrases from your PSD file, saving each variation as a separate JPEG in the same folder.

In the aforementioned zip file, I kept everything in the iphone_background folder.

4. Sync Photos

Connect your iPhone to your computer. Under the iTunes iPhone page, go to the Photos tab. Select the folder where your PSD and JPEG is located as the folder to sync your photos from. When you sync your iPhone, you may receive an error message that your PSD wasn’t uploaded. That’s fine, just click the checkbox to not receive the message again, or move your PSD to another location.

5. Set as Background

Under the photos app on your iPhone, look in your photo library for your newly created JPEG image. Click on the image and set as your lock screen background. Now you have a Japanese phrase to memorize every time you view your lock screen. Good luck!

As a reminder, save yourself the dirty work and download this zip file for a PSD template and Hiragana JPEG backgrounds to get you started.
