The Ortlieb Vario Pannier is a permanent fixture on my bike. I use it to store my repair kit, a change of clothes, extra beverages, food, and my bike locks. With all this, it still has room for a bag of groceries.
It’s the perfect commuting pannier because it converts easily into a backpack. Backpack straps and padding stow away in the front. The quick release rail attachment unhooks by pulling the handle up.
On the front, there is a helmet carrying loop. On the sides, neoprene pockets to hold water bottles, and reflective highlights for road travel. On the inside, a 9“ x 10“ pocket and zippered compartment.
Overall measurements are 19.7 x 11 x 7.9 inches with a 1,220 cubic inch volume, at 2lbs 10oz. The interior can hold up to a 15.4 in. laptop.
The Vario isn’t entirely waterproof. It’s composed primarily of coated nylon, with a roll-top and velcro strap. Anything moisture sensitive inside should be protected with a waterproof case.
I paid $150 on REI.com for mine. I love the way it looks and it works great. I recommend it to anyone who commutes or tours, and has a rear rack on their bike.
