Ortlieb Vario Ortlieb Vario

The Ortlieb Vario Pannier is a permanent fixture on my bike. I use it to store my repair kit, a change of clothes, extra beverages, food, and my bike locks. With all this, it still has room for a bag of groceries.

It’s the perfect commuting pannier because it converts easily into a backpack. Backpack straps and padding stow away in the front. The quick release rail attachment unhooks by pulling the handle up.

On the front, there is a helmet carrying loop. On the sides, neoprene pockets to hold water bottles, and reflective highlights for road travel. On the inside, a 9“ x 10“ pocket and zippered compartment.

Overall measurements are 19.7 x 11 x 7.9 inches with a 1,220 cubic inch volume, at 2lbs 10oz. The interior can hold up to a 15.4 in. laptop.

The Vario isn’t entirely waterproof. It’s composed primarily of coated nylon, with a roll-top and velcro strap. Anything moisture sensitive inside should be protected with a waterproof case.

I paid $150 on REI.com for mine. I love the way it looks and it works great. I recommend it to anyone who commutes or tours, and has a rear rack on their bike.

  1. The Ortlieb Vario pannier converts to a backpack with little difficulty. The top rolls up like a dry bag.
  2. The Ortlieb Vario quick release operates by pulling the handle up: simple.
  3. The backpack attachment stows away in front of the Ortlieb Vario.
  4. The backpack attachment for the Ortlieb Vario hooks up to rigid plastic mounting points and buckles. It's pretty quick and simple.
  5. The backpack attachment for the Ortlieb Vario is sufficiently padded for traveling comfortably.
  6. A helmet mount on the back of the Ortlieb Vario. Nice feature.
