This portion of the series covers Tues., Oct. 5 2010. I traverse Gothics, Saddleback, and Basin Mountain—the most difficult portion of the Great Range Trail.

The view of Gothics is one of the best views on the whole trail. Saddleback and Basin, although beautiful in their own right, don’t provide the same sweeping panoramic views.

  1. In the higher elevations of the Adirondacks, moss carpets the ground, with stunted evergreens in dense clusters

  12. Along the Great Range, cracks like this in boulders offer the only means not to slide down wet lichen.

  13. The southwest trail of Gothics has a series of polymer wrapped steel guide cables threaded through eye hooks bolted into rock face. There are still portions without cables, making for a slippery descent. The other side of Gothics is a simpler hike.

  14. The ominous mist shrouded Basin Mtn. as seen from Saddleback summit. From Saddleback to Basin, easily some of the most difficult marked trail in the Adirondacks.

  15. The clouds blow in thick on Saddleback, limiting views.

  16. Descending from Saddleback Mtn. towards Basin Mtn., the going gets steep. I ended up lowering my backpack with a cord in order to get down towards the end. Hard to believe people do this section in the winter.

  17. Basin descent southwest side, is easier going. A long ladder covers a steep area.
