Haystack Haystack

The final installment of the Great Range Trail series, autumn 2010. I explore portions of the Slant Rock area on Fri. Oct. 8, as well as Mt. Haystack., Mt. Skylight., and Mt. Marcy on Sat. Oct. 9. High Peaks Region, Adirondack Park.

By far the most beautiful portion of the range, Haystack and Marcy offer sweeping views of the Adirondacks. Although Skylight is typically not considered part of the range, it’s only .5 mi up from Four Corners, and you can ditch your pack near the trailhead. If you have the energy, it’s worth it.

  1. Looking out at twilight from Slant Rock lean to.

  2. Little Haystack and Haystack. This was taken prior to my first attempt up. The winds were over 50mph, couldn't keep my footing. Had to turn back.

  3. Slant Rock is a giant boulder sloped like a lean-to. If it weren't for all the prohibited fire pits, it would make an excellent shelter.

  6. The spine of Haystack's summit offers some small alcoves to brace oneself against the wind.

  9. Skylight is a nice hike. Half a mile up from Four Corners, and you can ditch your pack at the trailhead because you go back the way you came.

  10. Lines of stones protect the Arctic-Alpine vegetation. Often brought up in the pockets of hikers.

  14. One of my favorite hikes is the ascent of Marcy from the south. It is very exposed and distant, giving a feeling of timelessness.

  15. First time I've been on the top of Marcy and never saw anyone. Eventually the summit steward appeared from further down.
