Isaac Asimov’s third robot novel featuring plainclothes detective Elijah Baley and humaniform robot R. Daneel Olivaw. The Robots of Dawn takes place two years after the events ofThe Naked Sun.

In the two years since his successful investigation on Solaria, Elijah Baley has formed a group of earthmen who are training for and advocating space exploration. Baley has frequently attempted to seek support from Earth and Auroran officials, but has been thwarted.

His chance comes when Dr. Han Fastolfe, a powerful Auroran official, and quiet ally to Baley, is accused of destroying a humaniform robot. Baley is sent to Aurora to investigate the roboticide with his humaniform robot partner, R. Daneel Olivaw.

Again, Baley encounters a serious dilemma, a seemingly insoluble case must be resolved, for the sake of the future of humanity. If Dr. Fastolfe is not cleared of the roboticide, his political opponents will ensure that earth remains a technologically inferior island in an ocean of inhabitable worlds, while the Spacer worlds will spread their degenerating culture, crippled further by the robots that shelter and protect them from conflict and challenge. The result would be a regressive and degenerate future for humanity.

The Robots of Dawn is a further improvement from the previous two robot novels. The intricate plot twists and robotic intrigue make for an eager read. The evolving friendship between the human Baley and robot Olivaw takes on greater depth. Relationships are fleshed out and the struggle of Baley’s agoraphobia is well portrayed. Baley is at the apex of character development and the repercussions of the interactions are very long lasting.
