Information is Beautiful
May 10 2011 5:49:31 pm EST
Just found this gem of a blog: Information is Beautiful. The website is a collection of aesthetically appealing charts, diagrams, graphs, and all sorts of other pictorial data.
I think it’d be great to wallpaper a room with stitched together visualizations from the website. At the very least, you could learn something while staring at the wall all day…
Once you have a raised bed, adding a hoop house is relatively simple. The addition of a hoop house can extend your harvest into four seasons.
I have been following Patti Moreno lately. She has developed a method of urban harvesting entitled ‘urban sustainable living.’ She incorporates ideas of container gardening, vertical gardening, and Square Foot Gardening to maximize harvest in a given space.
This how-video is an excellent reference for those who want to make their own raised bed and hoop house. It’s simple enough to incorporate the concepts into a suburban or rural landscape.
My Travels with Eos: FAQ and Images
May 9 2011 6:58:02 pm EST
I just published an FAQ page for journalists and people who have read or are reading my novel, My Travels with Eos.
I try to answer frequently occurring questions about my motivations and thoughts on the novel.
I also published some high resolution photographs of myself and the main characters in the novel. Feel free to use them for publication purposes.

Took time off of promoting my novel to build some raised beds for two apple trees. I published a how-to guide here
It’s a relatively simple process if you have the right tools. Here are some of the benefits of a raised bed:
- Better on the back
- More control over soil conditions: Since you’re building up, you add the soil you want. If you distrust the soil below, you can always put pavers under your raised bed to completely block root penetration or leeching.
- Improved drainage
- Faster spring thaw
- Readily accepts a hoop house for early spring and late fall plantings
In May of 2008, I published an article entitled ‘Planting Container Fruit Trees’. While I was successful planting the fruit trees, I failed to maintain them. As a result, two died of disease, while another bared no fruit. As of yesterday, I transplanted the remaining fruit tree to a raised bed. You can read the article for further details.
I am searching for someone who has successfully maintained container fruit trees. In the meantime, you may reference this excellent guide by the National Gardening Association to ensure success.
Tomorrow, I plan on introducing my new raised bed approach for two apple trees.
Working on a guide to raised bed gardening. Keep an eye out!
The Ballston Journal just published a nice article entitled Ballston author’s new book is out of this world about my new novel and the publishing process.
Jessica Bennett, a reporter with the Ballston Journal, was rather thorough in her questioning, covering the plot synopsis, publishing process, and family impressions. I was honored to be interviewed and thank the Ballston Journal for featuring me!
For two weeks now I have swapped out my computer chair for an exercise ball and have been very satisfied with the results. I wrote an article about my experience with photos of ball exercises I do to break up a day of sitting.
The inspiration came after reading an alarming article on NPR entitled: Sitting All Day: Worse For You Than You Might Think, I realized that in spite of 30 minute daily exercises, I was still not doing enough for my health.
To address this problem, I now sit on a ball and break up my day with more exercises. I will outline other routines in further articles.
