Yaddo Gardens: A Visual Overview Yaddo Gardens: located just east of the Saratoga Race Track in Saratoga Springs New York.
  • Along an inconspicuous narrow road, signs point to the Yaddo Gardens.
  • Yaddo Mansion, completed in 1893, was the estate of Spencer Trask, a New York Financier, and his wife Katrina. After the premature death of their four children, Spencer and Katrina decided to convert the mansion into a revolving community of artists. It is still an active community to this day, seeing the likes of Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winning artists.
  • Though the mansion and the surrounding area are reserved for the resident artists, the gardens are open to the public. Here, Ionic columns and a marble entablature mark the entrance to the rose gardens.
  • Crossing the base of a trailing lawn, one crosses a large fountain.
  • Another fountain lies at the heart of the flower gardens.
  • This fountain is a home to Koi and water lilies
  • Four marble statues line the eastern portion of the rose garden, each representing a different season. Here, winter holds pinecones.
  • Autumn holds shaves of wheat.
  • Summer holds fruit.
  • Spring holds flowers
  • Further east, amidst an alcove of pine trees, lies another statue—“Christalan.” William Ordway Partridge sculpted it in 1900 in memory of the Trask children, whose death gave life to the artist’s retreat. Each of the children’s names is engraved at the base of the sculpture. White myrtle, an ancient symbol of love, surrounds the statue.
  • Another Yaddo gem: the rock garden.
  • The rock garden is darker, more feral than the rose garden. The transition between the two is abrupt.
  • From the rocky fountain featured earlier, water meanders down to a statue amidst a pond.
